Like many places, we are in the midst of what I like to call “Construction Season.”
The road signs appear and suddenly, we are merging right, merging left, coming to a dead stop in the middle of the highway while loud machinery and brave men and women work right next to us. In the meantime, we complain and we grouch while they are simply trying to improve or fix something that is broken.
And isn’t it just like God to drop a message right into your lap at a time like this? It’s been a work in process. A word here, a sentence there, until suddenly, I see the whole picture of what it truly means to be a child of God, under construction.
Over the last six months or so, the Lord has impressed upon me that this is a time of building, of construction. While we are busily building our lives, health, and wealth on our terms, God is in the business of building us up into people who reflect Him and His character.
He is building His church. Tearing down the old construct that we have become used to and showing us the foundation of Jesus, pointing out the places that have mold or rot that we have allowed in. Places not built on Biblical truths, but on what man instituted instead. He is showing us this, not to shame us, but to correct us, to teach us, to expand our knowledge and give us a fresh experience with Him.
The practices of worship are being challenged. There is an expectation that worship is more than a few feel good songs and a handshake at the end of service. We are treading on Holy Ground. It’s our privilege to slow down and take in the Divine. To allow the Spirit of God to move in the atmosphere and usher Him in to do the work necessary to fix or improve something that is broken.
He is building His people and their confidence in Him. If there is any discernment, it’s not hard to see the sign of the times. His people will have to be bold. Unafraid. He is encouraging us to interact with Him, the Holy Spirit, and Jesus. He is pouring His Word out to the nations in ways that haven’t been seen before.
This is the time to live like we mean it. To acknowledge that construction is not the inconvience we think it is. Think of how nice it is to drive on a newly paved road, without having to dodge potholes. Now imagine how the Lord is smoothing the way on the road of life. Installing turn signals and stop signs to keep us from going in the wrong direction. Widening the shoulder so there’s a place to pull off and rest. Allowing us to merge with other Believers so we can guide others on the way. Perhaps “construction season,” isn’t as bad as we thought?
